Hi Everyone - I finally was able to order new replacement workbooks for those that need / want updated workbooks for class and online access. They are shipping today so we should have them by week 4 Dumping debt. They are $19.95 each and I ordered 10 of them. Each workbook contains a card with a unique online access code. See you Monday :-) dave
There are 3 things you can do with money, Spend it, Save it, and Give it away. Intentionally Giving it away is the most fun you can have with money but spending can be fun too. I guess you could use it for kindling or wall papering a bathroom but let's not go there.
My favorite way to buy new things is with proceeds from selling old things. This way I get the shiny new object I wanted and do not impact the family budget cash flow. We did this over the weekend and sold a white macbook and a ski outfit to be able to purchase a new Ipad with cash and still have enough leftover to buy a large Mcdonalds diet coke and small fry on the ay home. Things to consider: When you buy something new ask yourself, "Will I want to sell this someday to fund the next purchase"? If the answer is yes, open it carefully, original packaging enhances the value significantly. Keep all the documentation etc. If it's clothing keep the tags, put them in a ziplock bag and label the bag with a sharpie. In our basement I have a shelf of original packaging waiting to be reunited with it's contents and find a new home. I've been using Craigslist more as of late as Ebay seems to have gotten really expensive. I don't meet buyers from Craigslist at my home, I meet in the lobby of Kensington or some other public place. Have some fun with this, I know I do. dave
We had 14 class members and 3 visitors last night at Culvers, so our class is still growing! Great teaching by Dave Ramsey and interesting discussion from the group about what their spending reveals about their priorities in life. Turns out we have 10 Nerds and only 4 Free Spirits. Maybe the Free Spirits will be dragged in to class by their Nerds next week!!
The great motivator Zig Ziglar said Money isn't the most important thing in life, but it's reasonably close to oxygen on the "gotta have it" scale. If your going to win long term in anything you have to have a plan. In the world of cash flow management that plan takes on the form of the allocated spending form (link above). Very straight forward, live it, love it, share it. Use a pencil is my advice because life is messy and things change but when they do you will have a plan and be able to adjust of the fly.
I wanted to give some detail on how smartypig can be used to manage sinking funds. As we discussed in class, this is only one way to implement sinking funds. I've discussed how my family uses sinking funds as part of our overall monthly budget in a previous post. I recently figured out how to do screen shots on my mac and find all kinds of ways to use it, this being one. :-) Anyway at left is a sinking fund (or savings goal in smartypig lingo) for back to school expenses fall 2013. You can click on the image for an enlarged version. You can see how it helps you manage the sinking fund very effectively. If anyone wants to try the pig and is interested in doing so via a referral email let me know. Smarty pig offers a small referral incentive that I put back into the FPU ministry at KCC to cover supplies.
The Orion FPU class kicked off last night at Culvers!! We had 16 in attendance and some even got dinner or dessert to have during the session. Of course they paid cash. We are expecting a few more next week, so we are re-arranging the room for more seating.
The group learned about saving from Dave, had a few laughs and had some great discussions afterward. We found out we are not alone in our challenges with handling money!!
Hi everyone - I was so excited to get the Troy Monday night FPU class started last night. We had a great turnout of just over 50 people. We had a fantastic cross section of singles, couples, newly married people. I've re-published to class info sheet below. You guys have some homework in advance of next weeks class. Check out page 19 of your member workbooks for specifics. I updated the attendance in the online software & hope I have it accurate. I'm excited for next weeks class. Please be in prayer for the Orion Campus that is starting their FPU class tonight at 7:30. We are starting to see registrations pick up for the Clinton Twp class as well that starts in a few weeks. We talked about one of my favorite things last night, "sinking funds" please check out my previous blog post on budgeting using sinking funds and integrating them into your budget. See you guys Monday - In Christ dave
Hi Everyone - With the addition of the Clinton Twp FPU class we now have FPU community classes at 3 of our 4 Metro Detroit Campuses! YEAH!!! Huge win and lots of hard work by many people to make this happen, thank you!
The response for the Troy class was so large we had to close it to new registrations. Orion has a class open at Culvers that starts this coming Tuesday at 7:30, not to late to jump in. We just added a Clinton Twp class today, starts 10/3/12 @ 6:30 at King Academy in Mt. Clemens, please spread the word. We also have Troy & Orion January classes open. All the info is on the website - www.kensingtonfpu.org. Videos are brand new and it's 9 weeks not 13 now. Let's do this!
Can't wait to see what God has in store in the coming 9 weeks.
Registration just opened for our Fall Clinton Twp FPU class. Class starts 10/3/12 at 6:30 meeting at King Academy. More info here.
